After an agonising 11-year wait for an ICC trophy, Team India eventually won their second T20 World Cup on June 29, defeating South Africa by seven runs in a thrilling Barbados final.
The Indian cricket team and its supporters experienced an emotional rollercoaster during the 2024 T20 World Cup. India’s run to the championship game was nothing short of extraordinary, despite fierce opposition from the world’s top cricket teams.
Vice-president of the BCCI Rajeev Shukla praised the outcome as a fantastic accomplishment and emphasised how important it is for Indian cricket.
“After defeating South Africa and numerous other nations, winning the ICC T20 World Cup is a fantastic accomplishment that has everyone in high spirits. I want to thank the BCCI officials, team management, and each and every player. They arrived here today aboard an Air India private chartered aircraft, and they will now be travelling to Mumbai, where they will be welcomed,” he stated, as cited by the Economic Times.

Hurricane Beryl, a category four storm that struck Barbados and forced Grantley Adams International Airport to close for three days, caused a delay in the team’s return to India. On July 4, BCCI secretary Jay Shah arranged a specially chartered Air India flight to return the winning squad, support staff, families, and media representatives to Delhi.
A number of things have happened to commemorate the Indian cricket team’s victorious homecoming as the country celebrates this historic win. Thousands of jubilant fans welcomed the team when they arrived in New Delhi.
After that, the team headed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s house for breakfast, where they were dressed in specially made “Champions” jerseys to honour their accomplishment. Later in the evening, there will be an open-top bus procession in Mumbai to extend the festivities and let supporters celebrate this historic victory with one another.
