Before the start of the two-match Test series between India and Bangladesh, the bowling coach for the hosts, Allan Donald, has made an apology to Rahul Dravid for sledging the Indian batter during a tri-nation series match in 1997. The incident occurred while India was competing against Bangladesh.
The event took place in Durban during a One-Day International match. “When I talk about Durban, there was one unpleasant occurrence that took place there. Dravid and Sachin were dominating us in every way imaginable. I went a little bit beyond the bounds of acceptable behaviour.
The only thing I can say about Rahul Dravid is that he has my utmost respect. I would like nothing more than the opportunity to sit down with Rahul, take him out to dinner, and offer my sincere condolences for what transpired earlier in the day. I simply needed to engage in some foolish activity in order to bring his wicket about “During an interview on Sony Sports Network, Donald made the following statement.
“But please accept my sincere apology for the things I said back then. What a top-notch gentleman, what a top-notch chap he is. I’m not sure if Rahul is listening, but if he is, I’d really like spending the evening with you.”
On the other side, Dravid was effusive in his admiration for the former pacer and added that he would welcome the opportunity to pick the former player’s brain.
“Bowling was one of his many talents. He is almost certainly one of the best opponents I have faced over the course of my career.
When I see him now and meet him at the ground, I tell him, “It’s much nicer to see you like this without a ball in your hand on top of your mark with the sunscreen on the face.” I must admit that when I say this to him, it makes me feel a lot better.
He was a terrific lightning-fast bowler who was also quite intimidating. It would mean the world to me if we could get together and chat about fast bowling; because he’s gone on to become a highly successful coach who instructs a large number of aspiring young fast bowlers, I’m sure he has a lot to share with me “Dravid added.
“It will be beneficial for us to pick his brain as we also have a large number of younger guys in our group. Simply having the opportunity to work with him on the field is wonderful.”
