Wasim Jaffer, a former cricket player for India, was just named the state team’s new head coach of Punjab. Jaffer was overwhelmingly selected by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) to replace renowned Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait in the position.
Rumours had surfaced that Jaffer may succeed Trevor Bayliss as head coach of the Punjab Kings come IPL 2025. He served as PBKS’s batting coach from 2019 to 2021 in addition to serving as a batting consultant. But prior to the IPL 2024 auction, he resigned from the position.
Jaffer was formerly the head coach of the state cricket teams of Odisha and Uttarakhand. But while he was in Uttarakhand, he was accused of selection prejudice, and as a result, he resigned from his position.
We have faith that Wasim Jaffer will inspire the group: Amarjeet Singh Mehta, President of the PCA
Following Jaffer’s selection as Punjab’s head coach, Amarjeet Singh Mehat, the president of the Punjab Cricket Association, took front stage and stated that the board was eager to have him join their coaching staff.
We all agreed to name him head coach since our primary goal is to win both the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Ranji Trophy. We have no doubt that Jaffer’s experience and skill will inspire the group to victory. We didn’t want to pass up the chance to have him join us because he is among the top longer format players in the nation, Mehta said to.
He continued, “We wanted to be consistent in red-ball cricket, which is why we thought of looking at Jaffer. We have done fairly well in white-ball cricket lately.”

Under former Indian cricketer Aavishkar Salvi, Punjab won both the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy last season. Salvi left the PCA to join the National Cricket Academy, therefore Jaffer took over as head coach.
