After competing in the impending Duleep Trophy, India batsman Prithvi Shaw will play county cricket for Northamptonshire. The Duleep Trophy will begin off the domestic season 2023–24 from June 28 to July 16.
This will be his first appearance in the English County Championship. Bishan Singh Bedi, Sourav Ganguly, and Anil Kumble, all former India captains, have previously played for Northamptonshire.
After the Duleep Trophy, Shaw will participate in four-day county matches and the 50-over domestic tournament, the Royal London One-Day Cup, according to the Times of India.
“Prithvi Shaw will participate in both four-day County Championship matches and the Royal London One-Day Cup (50-over tournament). Before that, he will compete in the semi-final of the Duleep Trophy (against Central Zone) and, if necessary, the final (12–16 July),” the report stated.
During the previous Ranji Trophy season, Shaw scored 379 runs off 383 balls against Assam, surpassing former cricketer Sanjay Manjerekar’s (377) record for the most runs scored in a single innings for Mumbai. Notably, it was also the second-highest score a batsman had ever recorded in the top first-class competition.
The cricketer from Maharashtra has played in five Tests, six ODIs, and one T20I for his country. The 23-year-old has scored 3679 runs in 42 first-class matches, including 12 centuries and 15 fifties.
Prithvi Shaw had a forgettable IPL 2023 campaign with the Delhi Capitals.
With the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Shaw has had a disappointing season. One of the causes of DC’s poor performance this season was the poor performance of the opening batter. Notably, he was absent from the majority of Delhi’s IPL 2023 contests.
In eight innings, the 23-year-old has scored only 106 runs, including a half-century at an average of 13.25 and a strike rate of 124.70. In the previous IPL season, he was the third-highest run scorer for DC, behind David Warner and Rishabh Pant. The gifted opener hopes to reclaim his form and make a comeback within the next few years.
