The SA20 league’s Pretoria Capitals have announced Jonathan Trott as their new head coach. Trott was a batter for England in the past. The team only let go of Graham Ford, their first coach, four days before to this statement.
After a difficult 2024 season, the Pretoria Capitals, owned by the JSW Group (who also owns the Delhi Capitals in the IPL), have been looking for a new outlook. The squad enjoyed a great start in 2023 under Ford’s direction, making the playoffs in their first year.
They only managed three victories in 10 group-stage games in 2024, placing them sixth out of six teams, a dramatic decline in performance.

Strong contender Jonathan Trott to be the next head coach of the Delhi Capitals
Jonathan Trott joins his new position with a plethora of experience. Since July 2022, the 43-year-old has managed Afghanistan’s participation in three World Cups as a member of the national squad.
Especially in the recent 2024 T20 World Cup, where the team made a fantastic run to the semifinals, defeating cricketing heavyweights like Australia, New Zealand, and Bangladesh along the way, his stint with Afghanistan has been characterised by extraordinary success.
Concerns are raised regarding Trott’s future in Afghanistan by the appointment. His current deal expires at the end of 2024 and was renewed in January. Although Trott’s international duties and the SA20 league (which starts in January 2025) do not directly conflict, it is uncertain if he would continue to play both roles or concentrate only on his current duty with Pretoria Capitals.
The seven-year relationship between the Delhi Capitals and head coach Ricky Ponting in the IPL has come to an end. Given the relationship between the two teams, there is much conjecture that Trott would run for the position in the future.

Trott’s name has also come up in conversations for the England men’s white-ball head coach post, despite the fact that he is not a lock for it.
