Officials from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have stated that Nazmul Hassan, the board’s president, is planning to step down from his position in order to work with the government to implement change. As the president of BCB, Hassan is currently serving his fourth term in office. Since the start of the nation’s political instability, he and his wife have hidden out in London.
A number of additional board members who have the backing of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina have also been missing since August 5. In addition, word has it that the few board directors present in Dhaka held a meeting on August 14 to decide on their next move.
It is noteworthy that a large number of previous board members and organisers showed up at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium with the demand that the Nazmul Hassan-led panel step down from the board.
A BCB director said, “One of our directors spoke with him, and he indicated that Papon bhai is willing to work with the government and resign from his position as President in order to implement changes within the board.”
The same source states that Asif Mahmud, the Sports Advisor, recently met with BCB officials to discuss and determine whether the board can designate an interim head in accordance with the ICC structure.
It should be noted that the current board will expire in October 2025. However, the board directors have raised fears that their departure may affect Bangladesh’s ability to host the upcoming T20 World Cup, which is planned to take place in October of this year.
