In the ninth match of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024, Pakistani women take on United Arab Emirates women on July 23 at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium in Dambulla. After winning the toss, Pakistan chose to bowl first. Theertha Satish and Esha Oza were unable to take advantage of the powerplay as the UAE lost their first wicket, Esha, for 29 runs in 6.5 overs. As Theertha began to construct the innings and Kavisha Egodage left after scoring two runs, Rinitha Rajith did the same.
After Theertha made 40 off 36 balls in the 15th over, she walked back, and the UAE’s chances of winning quickly soured. With 12 runs, Khushi Sharma was the only batter in the middle order to score in double figures. The middle and lower order fell apart like a pack of cards. As the UAE managed just 103 runs on the board, Sadia Iqbal, Nashra Sandhu, and Tuba Hassan sparkled with two wickets apiece.
Pakistan was all over the UAE bowlers during the chase. Gull Feroza and Muneeba Ali, the openers, gained the initiative and prevented the opposition from getting back into the game. Together, they made 42 runs during the powerplay and used wise play to avoid giving up a wicket. In just 14.1 overs, Pakistan won the match by 10 wickets thanks to their opening wicket partnership of 107 runs. Muneeba and Feroza both had unbroken scores of 37 and 62, respectively.
Pakistan is nearly done with the playoffs.
As they now sit second in Group A behind India, Pakistan’s chances of making the playoffs have been strengthened with this victory. They have participated in three games, winning two of them handily. Their only setback came in their opening game of the Women’s Asia Cup T20 2024 against the formidable Indians. Unless they pull off a miracle in their next match against India, they are virtually guaranteed a spot in the playoffs.
