The appointment of three new members to the Governing Council of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be decided upon during the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI’s) Annual General Meeting (AGM), which will take place in Goa on September 25. The selection committee may also be discussed, even if it hasn’t been specifically listed on the agenda.
A. “Notice is hereby given that the 92nd Annual General Meeting (hereinafter referred to as AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (“BCCI”) will be held at the W Hotel in Goa on September 25, 2023, to transact the business as per the attached agenda,” read a notice from BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Sunday night. The AGM’s start time will be announced at a later time.
Shah has supplied an 18-point agenda for the AGM, with the most important items—Items B and C—listed first. These are what they are:
B. Election and induction of 2 (two) General Body representatives into the IPL Governing Council.
C. Appointment of one Indian Cricketers’ Association representative to the IPL Governing Council.
Currently, the chairman of the General Body is Arun Singh Dhumal, and a member is Avishek Dalmiya. The Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA), which elected Pragyan Ojha to the Governing Council last year, is the only representative from the group. It is yet unclear whether new members will be added—possibly in light of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) launch—or if the current members will undergo any changes. The other members of the Governing Council are CAG member CM Sane, Secretary Shah, and Treasurer Ashish Shelar.
It’s interesting that the senior men’s selection committee hasn’t changed. A change was anticipated since Ajit Agarkar of Mumbai was chosen as the committee’s chairman in July. Salil Ankola is another selector on the committee who is from Mumbai, and the North Zone is not represented. There have been some rumors that the AGM will involve a course correction.
However, there is a spot on the schedule for discussing the reorganization of the selection committee. It states:
K. The appointment of the Standing and Cricket Committees, as per Rules 25 and 26, respectively.
While Rule 25 deals with the formation of tournament committees, Rule 26 deals with the formation of selection committees in all formats, including men’s, women’s, and junior teams.
The selection of the BCCI delegate to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and other international organizations, such as the International Cricket Council (ICC), is another significant item to note. Shah is anticipated to be considered for these positions. The appointment of the Ombudsman and Ethics Officer is covered in Agenda Item J.
Important issues are frequently covered with a discrete agenda item that reads, “Consideration of any business that the President may deem necessary to include in the agenda.” This is stated as item Q, and it may be where important choices are made.
There are 38 people that make up the general body, and everyone has been informed about the AGM.
