The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approved an all-format tour by India to South Africa in December and January. Three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) scheduled for December 10, 12, and 14 at Durban, Johannesburg, and Gqeberha, respectively, will serve as the tour’s opening matchups.
The first of the three one-day internationals will be played in Johannesburg on December 17, with the other two matches taking place in Gqeberha and Paarl on December 19 and 21, respectively. The remaining two Tests of the series, which are both part of the World Test Championship 2023–25, will be held at Centurion and Cape Town, with the former hosting the Boxing Day Test from December 26–30 and the latter from January 7–11, respectively.
According to BCCI secretary Jay Shah, “The Freedom Series is significant not just because it features two excellent Test teams but also because it honors Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, two great leaders who helped shape our respective nations and the world around them.”
“The Boxing Day Test and the New Year’s Test are among the most significant events on the international cricket calendar, and the schedule has been built specifically around these landmark occasions. India has always enjoyed tremendous support in South Africa, and I have no doubt that spectators will be rewarded with some riveting matches with plenty of intensity,” he continued.
CSA Chairperson Lawson Naidoo stated: “I anxiously anticipate the arrival of the Indian Cricket Team and their devoted fans on our shores. The fact that we will have a comprehensive tour that includes all three game types makes me very happy since this is a crucial trip for both teams. We can anticipate spectacular cricket and contests between South Africa and India, both of which have outstanding potential. We have spaced out the matches around South Africa so that the trip will also allow us to highlight the best of the country. We get along quite well with BCCI, and I appreciate their help all along the way.
