The Indian team’s new coaches will include former India all-rounder Abhishek Nayar and former Netherlands international Ryan ten Doeschate, however the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not made the announcement officially. On July 19.
These two join the group of coaches that Rahul Dravid’s previous team, which also included T Dilip, who will remain as the fielding coach, and Gautam Gambhir, the new head coach. Dilip has established a reputation as a pleasant role model in the locker room in addition to being a skilled fielding coach. It’s thought that he excels at team-building activities, which is a crucial skill for athletes in a cutthroat setting.
Ten Doeschate and Nayar have both been named assistant coaches. While there is still some uncertainty around the appointment of the new bowling coach, Morne Morkel is a strong contender, and there is a good likelihood that the former South African pacer would join Gambhir’s coaching staff in this capacity.
All three of the recently appointed coaches—Nayar, Ten Doeschate, and Morkel—have previously coached Gambhir in the Indian Premier League (IPL) at different points in his career. While Morkel spent two years working with Gambhir at the Lucknow Super Giants, Nayar and ten Doeschate were with him during his successful spell at the Kolkata Knight Riders last season.
It makes sense that Dilip and Nayar will fly with the squad on Monday, but it’s not obvious how or when ten Doeschate will join the team. As a member of the coaching staff for the LA Knight Riders in Major League Cricket (MLC), he is currently in the United States. He might come straight to Colombo to join the team. Likewise, it’s unclear what Morkel has planned. He has had talks with the BCCI about perhaps taking on the role of bowling coach for the squad.
On Monday at 1 pm, the Indian squad is set to take a charter flight from Mumbai to Colombo. The BCCI is anticipated to formally introduce Gambhir as the new head coach before they depart. On July 22, at a five-star hotel in Andheri, Mumbai, a press conference is scheduled, and Suryakumar Yadav, the recently appointed T20 skipper, will be present. When the team arrives in Sri Lanka, BCCI chief Jay Shah, who is already in Colombo for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Annual Conference, will get the opportunity to meet the new players.
Nayar meets with the Mumbai team.
While Nayar was with the Mumbai club for a short time, he conducted a coaching session for the players in preparation for the next domestic season. Thirty to thirty-five seniors showed up for the workshop, which covered a variety of game-related topics including mental toughness and growth mindset. This week’s training took place earlier at the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) academy in Bandra Kurla Complex.
The clinic was scheduled to run for a week, but due to the unfavourable weather in the city, it had to be shortened. For a pre-season camp, the Mumbai team also departed for Alur, Karnataka. Nayar’s India duty prevented him from accompanying the side to Alur, where he would have liked to go. According to the MCA, Naryar volunteered to assist the Mumbai team without any commercial involvement.
“The chance Nayar promised to give the Mumbai players to impart his knowledge on several facets of the game was a good one. It should serve the players well in the upcoming season, according to MCA secretary Ajinkya Naik. Mumbai is the Ranji Trophy’s reigning champion.

According to a team member participated in the camp, “He was focusing on developing a mindset of growth and trying to teach them a few modern ways of practising and implementation of technique.” This webpage details the topics covered in the camp.
Among the current generation of players, both domestically and internationally, Nayar enjoys great respect, and a lot of people think that he has been a key component of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL success. Players that openly attributed Nayar’s success to the Knight Riders title victory last season include Varun Chakaravarthy and Venkatesh Iyer.
