Unlike any other cricket player in the world today, top Indian batsman Virat Kohli enjoys stardom. Along with Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo, the 35-year-old is one of the most followed athletes in the world. The Indian fans perhaps almost worship him. The captain of Australia, Pat Cummins, emphasised this point and made a joke about Kohli’s supporters.
Social media went crazy following a derogatory remark about Kohli and his supporters, according to Cummins. The bowler for Australia remembered a day when he had praised the star batsman and expressed his desire that he wouldn’t reach a century against them. Cummins had to take the brunt of the backlash on social media as this specific comment did not sit well with Kohli fans.
“You get relentlessly harassed by social media users if you use it for daily activities. Look out for the next few years and say anything about Virat Kohli. It was truly a praise that I seem to have said a few years back. When he earned a 100 after six months, Cummins’ social media went crazy. I had commented that he was a gun player and hoped he wouldn’t score a hundred.

Feeling like you have support from others is pleasant: Pat Cummins
One of the few athletes who has a love-hate connection with Indian supporters is Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins. After he guided the Men in Yellow to the ODI World Cup 2023 title, defeating India in Ahmedabad, the Indian supporters were devastated. However, when he was announced as the Sunrisers Hyderabad captain for the Indian Premier League 2024, the same fans greeted him with the greatest love and affection.

“My second home is India.” We come here so often. Your home teams are in the IPL. Thus, it seems to you that you have a large following. Alternatively, there are cricket enthusiasts who have cheered you on, or many say something like, “Oh, I’m from Kolkata or I support KKR,” when they approach me. So it’s good to know that not everyone is against you,” Cummins remarked prior to the 2024 Indian Premier League.
