In the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, the 15th game of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023’s inaugural season featured Mumbai Indians vs. UP Warriorz. Mumbai Indians entered the match undefeated, while UP Warriorz had lost their previous match against Royal Challengers Bangalore prior to playing the table-toppers.
For the first time in the competition, Mumbai Indians appeared powerless against UPW’s unrelenting bowling attack. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led MI was dismissed for 127 as Sophie Ecclestone of Up wrecked havoc by taking three wickets and conceding only 15 runs.
Tahlia McGrath and Grace Harris each scored 38 and 39 to enable Warriorz easily defeat Mumbai while UP was chasing 128. Let’s look at the key moments of the game and who said what in light of MI’s first loss of the tournament.
The following are the key talking points from the game between the Mumbai Indians and the UP Warriorz:
Ecclestone entered the contest blazing, giving the MI batters little chance. Ecclestone got three wickets in the four overs she bowled, allowed just 15 runs to be scored, and applied increasing pressure to a MI team that for the first time in the competition appeared helpless.
Heroics from Deepti Sharma: The talented Indian all-rounder entered the match clearly intending to claim the day as her own, taking two wickets in the four overs she bowled. She also contributed an unbroken 13-run knock to help her team to a stunning victory, handing MI its first defeat.
MI’s initial defeat
Mumbai Indians have experienced defeat in the 2023 WPL after five consecutive victories at the hands of the Alyssa Healy-led UP Warriorz. Despite making it to the tournament’s playoffs, UPW provided Harmanpreet Kaur plenty to think about before the upcoming rounds.
It was close, but the girls deserve credit for persevering and finishing the race, according to winning captain Alyssa Healy. Happy on that count, because you need to get some momentum as the tournament draws to a close. I’m not sure how important the toss was. I’m really happy with our spinners. We have a fair chance if the wickets keep degrading the way they are.
Best Player of the Game I was aware that Sophie was with me and that we would push limits, said Deepti Sharma. We had faith that we would win the game by persevering to the end. The pitch was marginally more effective than in the opening inning. A little bit more skidding was occurring.
The first few overs were challenging. Right away, we did a good job of executing our plans. The bowling team performed admirably, and Harris was also essential in helping us get back into the game. (On getting ready for the game, we were simply discussing how to play as a team and focus on the positives.) To make sure that we stayed in the top three, I wanted to lead the squad through the finish line.
