Before the 2024 Indian Premier League, the Mumbai Indians announced Hardik Pandya as their new captain. Rohit Sharma was forced to resign after guiding the franchise to five IPL championships. A number of rumors were circulating that MI might not keep their former skipper and that Rohit might consider a change team as the IPL 2025 super auctions approached.
The Indian Express reported that the Hitman, along with Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik, might be one of the four franchise retentions. It is noteworthy that, in advance of the upcoming season, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has released revised retention regulations. A franchise may keep up to six players, including one uncapped player, under the new regulations.
Under Hardik, MI had a poor IPL 2024 season. With only four victories in 14 games, the squad finished last in the points table. In addition to on-field disappointments, Hardik was jeered and insulted on the field and on social media, and the supporters were upset that Rohit was removed from the captaincy position.

Before the upcoming season, MI made some managerial changes. Mark Boucher was replaced as the team’s head coach by Mahela Jayawardene. Prior to stepping down from his six-year tenure as Head Coach from 2017, Jayawardene served as MI’s Global Head of Performance starting in 2022. Jayawardene has promised to carry out the ambition, although the franchise has been unable to win anything since 2020.
