Shubman Gill, one of India’s most accomplished batters, recently discussed an incident in which he was moved by a gesture made by MS Dhoni. Gill reflected on his first match in India, which took place in the year 2019, in a recent interview.
It was the fourth One-Day International (ODI) match of the five-match series that India was playing against New Zealand in Hamilton, and the visitors were batting first. Gill, who batted at the number three spot after being brought in by Trent Boult, only managed to score nine runs before being taken out of the game.
Although Gill did not impress in his first game, the Indian team as a whole did not perform well and were bowled out for 92 runs. To put the game beyond all reasonable doubt, New Zealand finished their run chase of the meagre total in 14.4 overs with 8 wickets remaining.
Gill felt terrible about his performance and India’s loss to New Zealand. This is when MS Dhoni gave him some words of encouragement.
“On the day that I made my debut with the team, we were bowled out for 90 (92), and I was sent packing after 15 overs. I was sitting outside, brooding about the fact that I had only scored 9 runs in my debut and that India had lost the match.
After that, Mahi bhai came to visit me and noticed that I was in a terrible mood. When this happened, I was between the ages of 18 and 19 years old. He told me, “at the very least, your introduction was more impressive than mine.”
After that, he began to joke around and laugh, and I was moved by the way he conducted himself, “remarked Gill while appearing on the Sonam Bajwa-hosted show “Dil Diyan Gallan.”
In a conversation with Sonam Bajwa, Shubman Gill reflects on the kind gesture that MS Dhoni extended to him during his debut match, which took place against New Zealand.
It is important to remember that MS Dhoni was bowled out for a golden duck in his very first game for India in international competition. It was a One-Day International match against Bangladesh that took place in Chattogram.
Speaking specifically of Gill, he has been selected for India’s T20I and ODI series against New Zealand, which will each consist of three matches. In addition, he was included in the team that was selected for the recently announced test series against Bangladesh.
