Due to his recall to the 14-member team for the first Test of the three-match series against Pakistan in Perth, bowler Lance Morris is expected to make his Test debut.
With 14 players, Morris is the only one without a cap. He is recovering from a back-stress issue that kept him out of the Ashes series. In three of Western Australia’s six Sheffield Shield matches, he took 11 wickets at a domestic comeback average of 25.54.
Other than Nathan Lyon replacing Todd Murphy after recovering from a calf injury, there are no other surprises in the team, which includes 10 of the starting XI from the most recent Ashes Test. After losing his place as Australia’s wicketkeeper in the One-Day Internationals during their victorious 2023 World Cup campaign, Alex Carey has kept his position in the multi-day game. Similar to this, Cameron Green, who Mitch Marsh later replaced in Australia’s World Cup squad, makes the squad for the first Test.
Despite going through a difficult period in Test cricket, which was highlighted by a double century against the same opponent in his 100th Test, David Warner, who had earlier in the year indicated his want for a Test farewell in the last Test of this series against Pakistan, has received support.
Pat Cummins (captain), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Lance Morris, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and David Warner are the Australian players in the team for the first test.
Under the direction of Pat Cummins, this team has developed a solid reputation throughout time. Chair of selectors George Bailey stated, “We feel they have earned the chance to start in our first home Test match at the start of the new World Test Championship cycle.”
“During the winter, thirteen members of the squad participated in the successful Ashes and World Test Championship tours, and Lance Morris has been called up after recuperating from a back ailment during that time.
“As ever, there will be opportunities in the short to medium term to break into this squad and we look forward to seeing the continued strong performances from players who have been performing domestically, many of whom will get a tremendous opportunity in the PM’s XI fixture against Pakistan later this week.”
