Moeen Ali, a prominent all-rounder for England, has declared his retirement from international cricket. The 37-year-old announced shortly after the Ashes 2023 that he would be retiring from Test cricket. Now, the all-rounder has chosen to forgo international cricket in favour of continuing his career in a number of franchise and domestic leagues around the world after not being selected for England’s upcoming Australia tour.
He participated in the winning teams for the ODI World Cup in 2019 and the T20 World Cup in 2022 for England. In 138 One-Day Internationals, Moeen has played for his country’s squad, amassing 2355 runs and taking 111 wickets. He has played in 92 T20I matches, taking 51 wickets while scoring 1229 runs at a strike rate of 142.41.
Moeen Ali stated in an exclusive interview with Mail Sport columnist Nasser Hussain, “It’s about being real to myself.”
Meanwhile, England’s team management demanded adjustments and wanted to add younger players to the starting lineup following their team’s failure to advance to the T20 World Cup 2024 finals. Moeen and Jonny Bairstow were left off the Australia series squad for the same reason. The cricket player from Birmingham stated, after giving it some thought, that while he wanted to play for England once more in international cricket, the squad needed to transition into a new cycle.
“My greatest days were when I was playing for England. I could hang on and give it another go at playing for England, but I know I won’t. I still believe I can play, even after retiring. I don’t think it’s because I’m not talented enough. However, I understand the current situation and the team needs to change into a new cycle.
