Candice Warner, the wife of renowned Australian batsman David Warner, recently made startling revelations regarding Cricket Australia’s lack of support for Warner following the ball-tampering incident that occurred during the 2017 South Africa tour. After becoming embroiled in the ball-tampering scandal, David, according to Candice, received no support from the board and was essentially left to contend for himself. The scandal shook the cricket world after Cameron Bancroft was captured on camera tampering with the ball and captain Steve Smith and then vice captain David Warner were removed from their positions. In addition, after Candice’s accusations against Cricket Australia, she came to her husband’s defense, who had been experiencing a poor run of form in international cricket. She even thinks that the 36-year-old has received unfair criticism from both supporters and selectors. Former Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson weighed in on the allegations in response to her statements. According to the 41-year-old, David Warner has been experiencing pressure from fans and selectors due to his performance.
“We have all admired Warner’s tremendous tenure as an opener and his accomplishments. But that is not the issue; his performance has been subpar for some time. This week, Warner’s wife Candice defended him on the television program The Back Page, according to Johnson’s latest column for The West Australia.
Dennis Lillee would still be beginning the bowling for Australia if this argument were true. Johnson
Mitchell Johnson also stated that despite Candice Warner’s admirable loyalty, Ricky Ponting would still be playing for Australia alongside Dennis Lillee if only past accomplishments were considered.
“Her loyalty might be admirable, but it was all a bit strange and cringey when she said if Dave doesn’t perform in that first Test, who do they bring in that’s better? I abhor this argument. If players were only evaluated based on their previous accomplishments, then Dennis Lillee would still be Australia’s opening bowler and Ricky Ponting would bat third,” wrote Johnson.
