Mayank Agarwal, formerly of the Punjab Kings, was a prominent figure among the older players that were let go by their respective Indian Premier League (IPL) clubs in advance of the 2023 auction. During the IPL 2022 season, he led his team as the captain.
Punjab finished in sixth place out of ten teams in the league under his guidance. Mayank’s individual form was also not very good, as seen by the fact that he scored a total of 196 runs in 13 games for an average of 16.33.
On Tuesday, Punjab decided to release nine players, and he was one of those guys. After releasing those nine players, Punjab is presently sitting on a surplus of INR 32.2 crore in their bank account. Mayank was purchased back for the sum of INR 14 crore in advance of the IPL 2022 tournament.
Following Agarwal’s release from Punjab Kings, former India player Sanjay Manjrekar expressed his thoughts on the situation. “When you’ve had a rough season, a high price tag isn’t going to help you out too much, as we can see from the situation with Mayank Agarwal, which is a really fascinating one.
There is the possibility that releasing that player and using the resulting money to possibly rebuy or, you know, investigate other choices could be tempting. The thing about Mayank Agarwal, however, is that. An excessively pleasant guy, despite the fact that this is not a game for lovely individuals “Sanjay Manjrekar commented on Star Sports.
“I’m referring to the wonderful few of seasons that he spent at the top of the batting order alongside K.L. Rahul. He really outbatted K.L. Rahul at the top spot, and he became the captain. However, in a perfect world, you would want a player to have one more year to show himself.
And the worst thing that could have happened to him was that he gave up his opening position, in which he was magnificent, and dropped down the order, which was the second worst thing that could have happened to him. Because of this, batting got more challenging, and since runs weren’t coming, the level of pressure increased.
Therefore, I feel sad for him, but he will be a very very tempting option for teams looking for an opener, because this is the man who will bring you large scores and at a strike rate of 150, 160 and is good against both spin and pace. Consequently, I feel sorry for him.”
