UPUL THARANGA is named the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his unbeaten knock. Tells that the pitch was really good and they were off to a good start. Adds he along with Dilshan got going nicely in that partnership. Praises his bowlers and also admits that they were poor in the field. Mentions that winning the first game will bring a lot of positivity in the dressing room.
Tillakaratne Dilshan, captain of Sri Lankan Legends, starts by thanking everyone who has worked hard to make the tournament happen. Adds he is happy with his batting and wants to take this form till the end. On winning the toss, Dilshan feels it was an important thing for them as the West Indies Legends had a few spinners on their side. Praises Tharanga for staying till the end and finishing. Feels all the games are really important going forward.
Tino Best is speaking on behalf of Brian Lara who is unwell. He got hurt while batting by a searing yorker from Dhammika Prasad. Tino feels they were a few runs short. Credits the curator for making a superb pitch. Praises Smith's knock. Feels 165-175 would've been a good score on this wicket against such a good Lankan side. Informs that he hasn't bowled for a year and he felt strong in the middle. Praises Dilshan's batting and adds that they have a history of playing against each other for over 15 years.
Earlier in the evening, West Indies Legends managed to cross the 150-run mark courtesy of decent knocks from Brian Lara and Dwayne Smith along with a late cameo by Tino Best. The Lankan bowling was mostly on the button as they kept a lid on the scoring rate more often than not. Stay tuned for the presentation...
West Indies Legends bowlers were not consistent enough. There were more bad overs than good ones. Everyone expected Tino Best to leave his mark with his extra pace but he disappointed in his first spell. He did try to turn things around in his third over by picking up a couple of wickets but that's too late. The best bowler on show was Sulieman Benn who bowled four tidy overs and managed to build some pressure from his end. Overall, there weren't enough dry overs to bother the Islanders. Just like their opponents, the fielding of the Caribbean side was also below-par which didn't allow them to gain any control.
A little bit of drama towards the end but eventually an easy victory for Sri Lanka Legends! It was a well-planned chase from them. Their openers, Jayasuriya and Dilshan, laid a strong platform in the Powerplay and then the stand between Dilshan and Tharanga took it forward. The good thing about this chase was that whenever a wicket went down, immediately another partnership blossomed. Also, the Lankan Legends never allowed the asking rate to become an issue. Credit to Upul Tharanga for staying there till the end to take his team over the line with an unbeaten 53.
