Mitchell Santner has been handed over the trophy. He along with his full team pose for a photo. Right then! That is it from this enticing series. New Zealand have clinched the ODI as well as the T20I series. It's been a tough series for Ireland but still a lot of positives to take from each game. The cricketing action does not end here. We have England battling it out with South Africa in Manchester, while India are taking on West Indies in the first ODI as well. Just switch tabs and enjoy the action of the other games as well. It's goodbye from here!
Mitchell Santner the skipper of New Zealand says that it was a hard-fought series and they were well fortunate to come out on top. Adds that despite the fact that there are big names missing, players like Michael Bracewell have stepped up and they have got over the line. Mentions that everyone understands their role in the team and they have all helped achieve victory in this difficult series Says they were expecting rain but the weather stayed good and they are thrilled to win this hard-fought series.
Andy Balbirnie the skipper of Ireland says that they wanted to set up a good score while batting first and he thought 174 was a really good total. Mention that this was the best wicket they played on in this series. Adds that it was a really impressive chase and good learning for them. Further says that it's another game that they have lost, but they have enjoyed their cricket. Concludes by saying that they have been improving and playing good cricket.
Glenn Phillips is the Player of the Match and the Player of the Series! He says it's a team effort starting from the first T20I where Lockie Ferguson grabbed four wickets in the game and the way James Neesham and Daryl Mitchell played in this game was great. Adds that they want to push themselves to run well between the wickets and with the world cup in Australia where the grounds are big it becomes important to run. Further says that he was not happy with his strike rate but there are different roles for everyone in the game.
Stay tuned for the presentation...
Earlier in the match, New Zealand had Ireland constrained till the partnership between Mark Adair and Curtis Campher broke the shackles and pushed their total to 174. It was a much-improved batting performance from the Irish side as compared to the first two games. However, this time they were unable to defend their target and ended up on the wrong side of the result once again.
Ireland would be disappointed that they missed an opportunity to register their first win on this tour. They had put up a competitive total and had started off well with the ball. Two drop catches in consecutive balls of Glenn Phillips could have been the turning point in the game. Had they taken those chances the game may have played out differently. Josh Little had bowled well taking 2 wickets for 16 runs in his first three overs. His final over though ended the game as James Neesham took him to the cleaners.
New Zealand began their chase in an attacking fashion and despite the fact they were losing wickets they maintained a healthy run rate. They looked like they were in trouble when they were 65 for 3, but Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips put on an 82-run partnership to make the chase look comfortable. Daryl Mitchell fell just short of his half-century but Glenn Phillips played an outstanding knock to take New Zealand to the finish line. He remained unbeaten on 56 off 44 balls. James Neesham came in and played a cameo of 23 runs in just 6 deliveries to wrap the match up.
The Kiwis have completed the whitewash of this T20I series and have made it six wins in six matches in this tour. They win by six wickets and with an over to spare. Ireland have put up quite a performance this series but have fallen well short of the finish line on multiple occasions.
