Man of the Match
Josh Philippe
Commentry
The Strikers were not that great with the ball as they barely got any momentum. Rashid Khan did threaten to get the team back into the game but Philippe was excellent. That is all we have for you from this game. Hop across to the Scorchers-Hurricanes clash.
Josh Philippe played a wonderful knock, batting till the end and strutting his stuff. He ensured that he did not throw his wicket away and got the Sixers across the line. JOSH PHILIPPE HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH AS WELL.
Wow. What a humdinger. Sixers nearly pulled of a defeat from the jaws of victory. They started well, thanks to a 72-run opening stand and then Hughes played a wonderful cameo. But once Hughes departed, the innings lost steam, before Philippe got them back on track in the 19th over.

FOUR! Stunning finish to the over! 21 from it which has sealed it for the Sixers. A length ball outside off, Curran backs away and carves it over covers. Matthew Short gives it a chase from sweeper and dives, gets to the ball, stops it but the ball is parried into the ropes!

FOUR! That is a lovely shot again! The previous ball did it for Neser. Even after bowling a good ball, he got hit for a boundary. So, he went for extra effort, targetted the yorker, but ended up dishing a low full toss. Philippe gets across and laps it behind square leg for consecutive boundaries!

OUT! Caught! Brilliant catch from Rashid. A high full toss outside off, Vince throws his bat at the ball. Hits it well but it goes towards Rashid at sweeper cover. Rashid hares ahead from his position and pouches the ball above the turf. The umpires though converge and ask help from the third umpire. They first want to check the front foot. Multiple replays and now they confirm that it is a legal ball as they move towards Rashid's end. They are not sure if it is a clean catch. It looked like a clean one. And again after a few replays, they confirm it is a clean one. Now, they check the height of the ball. Is it over the waist? Don't think so and the third umpire agrees too. And Vince has to go now. Twist in the game coming up? 26 more needed off 13 balls.
Caught at sweeper cover. But has Siddle overstepped? Looks really close. And the third umpire is taking his time. Seems like he is happy about the front foot as they move to the catch. Looks a clean catch too.

TACTICAL TIME-OUT TAKEN NOW. This is more or less enforced. You have got to take it in overs 7-12, else, it gets enforced in the 13th. The Sixers are playing freely here and even though the required run rate is over 10, you can back them to chase the target down on THIS ground. The square boundaries are very small. Daniel Hughes is playing an absolute gem of an innings, taking all the pressure off Josh Philippe, who has not quite looked at his best so far.

Time for the run chase. The Strikers' players walk out as well. Peter Siddle with the ball first up. Justin Avendano and Josh Philippe are the two openers for the Sixers. Spin first up as Matthew Short is ready with the ball. Here we go.
A new ground. Short dimensions. Is 177 enough? New pitch, so we don't know. Sixers are not the best chasers and tonight, they are without Henriques as well. Might be a tall ask.
It was not a perfect bowling performance from the Sixers. They struggled with the wet ball in the Powerplay, got it back in the middle overs but then lost it towards the end. Tom Curran was a massive disappointment.
Jonathan Wells though, did the right thing. Bided his time and then, at the death, exploded. He ended up with 40 from 28 balls while Neser played a handy cameo of 25 from 15 balls. Of course, can anyone discount Rashid Khan's innings with the bat these days?
It was an innings of starts for the Strikers. No one really got going on a track which looked a nice one to bat upon, albeit with some grass on it. The Powerplay was a flying one, with 56 runs off it but then the fielding restrictions choked the run flow. Just 70 runs came in the next 10 overs which is when the likes of Pope and Hazlewood made merry.
50 runs in the last 4 overs. Real carnage. Have the Sixers thrown it away at the death? The score read 126/5 at the end of 16 overs when Lloyd Pope finished his spell and one would have expected the Strikers to get to 160 perhaps. The home side might have given 15 runs a bit too many.
19.6

A couple to end the innings. A fuller ball around off and middle, Wells drills it to long on and scampers back for a couple of runs. Strikers finish with 176 runs on the board.

Dropped again! Dwarshuis at deep square leg again. Another shortish length ball from Curran, Rashid pulls but it is again not from the middle of the bat. It once again goes towards deep square leg. Dwarshuis has to charge at the ball this time as it is dipping. He slides and gets both the hands to the ball but it once again pops out of his hands.

2
Dropped! Dwarshuis is the man. A slower bouncer around off, Rashid this time looks to pull but gets a top edge as he is early in the shot. The ball goes towards Dwarshuis at deep square leg. He settles under the ball to catch but it bursts through his hands. The ball rolls towards the fence but he goes back and fields.

In the air... but Pope cannot get his hands on it. Poor Lloyd Pope. One needs to get used to different lights in different grounds. A good length ball around off, Neser looks to flick but gets a top edge towards short third man. Now, Pope initially runs back from short third man. Then, he sees that the ball is not going that back and tries to go sideways, to his left. Now again, he understands that he has miscalculated the trajectory. Tries to run forward now. In the end, he tries to catch but does not get near the ball at all. He never understood the path of the parabolic ball at all. A single taken.

OUT! RUN OUT! Short gets a diamond duck! But under controversial circumstances. Wells works this through mid-wicket and calls for a single. Deep square leg comes in but then lets the ball go. Deep mid-wicket then gets across and completes the stop. Now, because square leg misfielded, Wells calls for a run and Short responds. But then, Wells changes his mind and sends his partner back. Tom Curran returns a slightly wide throw to the keeper who has to stretch to his left to collect. He disturbs the bails as Short tries to dive. The run out appeal is referred upstairs and replays show that the bat is short when the stumps are illuminated. But has the glove disturbed the bails? One angle seems to show that the ball is out of the gloves and hits the stumps, but after the bails are dislodged. But my colleague here, feels that when the bails were dislodged, the ball was slipping out of the gloves but was in contact. Well, seems like the third umpire agrees with this opinion too. GIVEN OUT.
Oh dear... mix-up and gone for all money! Is Matthew really short? The bat is short but has the keeper dislodged the bails with his gloves? There is a bit of confusion and eventually, in the end, the umpire gives the batsman out. Touch and go.
Matthew Short is the new man in. Around 6 overs left.

Jake Weatherald and Philip Salt, the two openers, for Strikers walk out to the middle. Sydney Sixers players stride out in the middle too. Ben Dwarshuis first up with the ball for the Sixers. Here we go...
The points table is looking closely stacked and both teams would be aiming to not only get a win, but a big win.
A NEW RECORD! Jon Carter has become the fourth batsman to hit 6 sixes in an over in T20 cricket. Who was the unfortunate bowler? Poor old Anton Devcich. Short balls, full balls, full tosses - the variety was there - but there was no change in the results.
The big news for the Sixers is that captain Moises Henriques is not playing today. He has gone back home for the birth of his first child. Congratulations, Mozzie! Justin Avendano replaces him while Daniel Hughes will be the captain for this game. Of course, the other big news is that Josh Hazlewood plays his first match after injury.
Sydney Sixers (Playing XI) - Josh Philippe(WK), Daniel Hughes(C), James Vince, Justin Avendano (IN FOR MOISES HENRIQUES), Jordan Silk, Tom Curran, Jack Edwards, Ben Dwarshuis, Jackson Bird, Lloyd Pope and Josh Hazlewood (IN FOR BENJAMIN MANENTI).
Adelaide Strikers (Playing XI) - Jake Weatherald, Philip Salt, Matthew Short, Alex Carey(C AND WK), Jonathan Wells, Cameron White, Michael Neser (IN FOR CAMERON VALENTE), Rashid Khan, Peter Siddle, Billy Stanlake and Harry Conway (IN FOR WES AGAR).
BAT FLIP - The flip of the bat has gone Alex Carey's way. ADELAIDE STRIKERS OPT TO BAT FIRST.
Sunday is here, so is the double header! Who is playing first up? Sydney Sixers and Adelaide Strikers. The venue is a new one - Coffs Harbour and it will play host to the Sixers. This will be followed by the Scorchers-Hurricanes match. Let's hope it is a cracker of a Sunday.
