When Kraigg Brathwaite, the captain of the West Indies, thought back on the match, he was happy that his team had bowled the visitors out for 160 in the opening innings but was a little disappointed that they hadn’t been able to do so because Dane Piedt and Nandre Burger had put on 63 runs for the final wicket.
Given how the first game of the series was ruined by weather, the second Test between South Africa and the West Indies could be appropriately characterised as a low-scoring thriller. The Proteas ended up winning the match because the home team was unable to chase 263 and was dismissed 40 runs short of their target after having spent more than two full days in the field.
Yes, it was evidently fairly large from the way you looked at it. I was thrilled though, bowling them out for 160. For them, that partnership worked well. You know, partnerships do occur in cricket. Thus, I won’t really focus on that too much,” Brathwaite said, according to an statement.
But Kraigg Brathwaite thought that getting a lead was the very least that the batting unit could have done, therefore he apologised for the total his team managed to score in their opening innings. He also hinted that one of the main reasons the hosts lost in the end was their poor batting performance in the opening innings.
“However, I believe that our first innings total ought to have been higher. We have to use it as a lead source. In my opinion, that was crucial. The bowlers’ attempt to bowl them out for 160 can never be criticised. Simply put, the batting effort in the first innings was insufficient. We had to retake the game by fighting. We ultimately came up short,” said Brathwaite.
We simply need to maintain our faith: Kraigg Brathwaite
Once he had finished thinking about the possibilities, Brathwaite reviewed the many advantages he believed had resulted from their recent missions using the red-ball method.
“As I previously stated, our fast bowling team has a very bright future, and Kemar Roach, who has a tonne of experience, is still on it. He still has a lot of Test matches remaining in him, you know. So, it’s really thrilling. However, I have to admit that the batting unit has me really thrilled.

The lineup we have is capable of doing the job, in my opinion. Of course, I’ve been requesting more Test matches. Five were on the rear of us. Indeed, we did not produce guys who were on average older than fifty. Though I think these top five may perform well for the West Indies, I am still enthusiastic about the fast bowlers. Thus, we only need to maintain our faith,” Brathwaite continued.
