The scenario is set for an enthralling Qualifier 1 between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) as the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs get near. On Tuesday, May 21, the game will be played at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
As the first team to qualify for the playoffs, KKR did so by winning the whole points table. Following a pivotal victory over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their most recent league game, SRH, who had been in third place after 13 games, shot up to the second rank.
KKR is making its first playoff appearance since finishing second in 2021.
When SRH previously participated in the playoffs, it defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Eliminator round before falling to the Delhi Capitals in the second round of qualifying.
KKR and SRH’s most recent postseason matchup occurred in Qualifier 2 of 2018. After winning by a margin of 14 runs in that game, SRH advanced to the championship game where they were beaten by Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
KKR won the toss and elected to bowl at Eden Gardens in their 2018 matchup. Wriddhiman Saha and Shikhar Dhawan, the openers for SRH, put on a strong 56-run partnership till Dhawan was removed by Kuldeep Yadav. SRH managed to score 174 runs in spite of a middle-order slump thanks to the efforts of Shakib al Hasan, Deepak Hooda, and Rashid Khan’s late burst.
Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine gave KKR a great start to their pursuit. But even with Nitish Rana’s backing after Narine was fired, a pivotal run-out by Rana changed the tide of events. Robin Uthappa and Dinesh Karthik made very little contributions, and Andre Russell also had trouble scoring. Rashid Khan’s outstanding bowling kept KKR at bay, limiting them to 160/9, but Shubman Gill’s 30 off 20 balls gave KKR hope. This victory gave SRH a 14-run lead and a trip to the final. Carlos Brathwaite and Shakib al Hasan both had significant roles with the ball, but Rashid Khan’s all-around performance was crucial to SRH’s victory.
