Jofra Archer, a star English seamer, has endured a forgettable IPL 2023 campaign marred by injuries and subpar performances on the field.

Due to injuries, the speedster has missed five of the ten matches contested by the Mumbai Indians this season. He has conceded runs at an economy rate of 9.5 while taking two wickets in five matches.

Jasprit Bumrah, Mumbai’s ace seamer, recently underwent surgery and is undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. In the absence of Bumrah, Jofra Archer has been MI’s bowling attack’s leader but hasn’t been at his best.

Former India cricketer Jhulan Goswami commented on Archer’s struggles, stating that the fast bowler will require some time to find his cadence as he returns from a lengthy injury layoff.

“Jofra is returning after a lengthy absence due to his injury, and he will play gingerly until he regains his normal rhythm. It will take time to return to your customary routine after the injury. Jhulan Goswami was quoted by News18 as saying, “When I was injured, whenever I returned to the field, I would always think about my injury and how if I did extra, if I got injured again, it would be detrimental to the season.”

Goswami defended Archer further by stating that he is gradually regaining his cadence and that a bowler cannot always be evaluated based on his strike rate, economy, or wickets taken. Occasionally, his bowling comfort and the velocity he generates also indicate his rhythm.

“Therefore, these inconsequential details are always on your mind. Occasionally, this can also have an effect on your performance. “However, at the moment, Jofra is regaining his rhythm; you cannot judge bowlers by their strike rate, economy, or wickets; it is all about how comfortable he looks while bowling and how much pace he can generate,” she added.

Notably, during MI’s previous match against Chennai Super Kings on Saturday, May 6, Archer bowled an economical spell of 0/24 in four overs while displaying excellent rhythm. CSK successfully chased down the target of 140 with six wickets in hand and 14 deliveries remaining, causing Mumbai to lose the match despite his impressive performance.

On May 9 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the Rohit Sharma-captained team will play Royal Challengers Bangalore.
