Jofra Archer was recalled by England for the first time in more than a year after being announced Thursday in a 14-man squad for an upcoming one-day international series in South Africa. The series will consist of three matches and will be played in South Africa.
Archer, a fast bowler for Sussex, was one of the shining lights during England’s triumphant run in the 2019 50-over World Cup; however, his career has since been hampered by elbow and back ailments.
The quick bowler, who was born in Barbados and is now 27 years old, last appeared for England in a Twenty20 international match against India in Ahmedabad in March 2021. However, it has been more than two years since the quick bowler appeared in his most recent one-day international.
Archer, however, was forced to sit out the entirety of the 2022 English season due to injury. Despite this, he was able to play for the second-string England Lions in a warm-up match against the Test side in Abu Dhabi a month ago before England’s 3-0 whitewash of Pakistan.
After only six balls had been played in the practise match, Archer struck Zak Crawley on the head with a bouncer.
In a statement that was released on Thursday, the England and Wales Cricket Board said that Archer was “recovering well from an elbow injury” and that he was “anticipated to return to international cricket in South Africa next month.”
On the other hand, emerging sensation Harry Brook, who just returned from Pakistan where he scored three excellent hundreds in the test format, has been given his first call-up to an ODI squad.
The three-game series will be contested over the course of six days, beginning on January 27 with two matches in Bloemfontein and concluding with a match in Kimberley on February 1.
