Jitesh Sharma has been named captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS) since Sam Curran returned to England for international action and Shikhar Dhawan is now sidelined. In their last league match of the IPL 2024 season, the squad will be led by the India international against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Notably, the wicketkeeper-batter was supposed to skipper the team in Dhawan’s absence and was included in the official captain’s photo session prior to the season.
But when Dhawan hurt his shoulder and was unable to continue in the tournament, Curran was given the baton. Now that he’s gone, Jitesh has the chance to take charge of the team and he’s determined to win the season by playing a brave style of cricket.
The England international was chosen over Jitesh Sharma because she has led Punjab before.
The 30-year-old concluded by summarising PBKS’s season and saying that the group played inconsistently the entire time. Even though they are ranked ninth in the points table, Jitesh thinks they have a lot going for them with players like Prabhsimran Singha, Ashutosh Sharma, Harpreet Brar, and Shashank Singh, and he also said the squad wasn’t lucky this time.
We have nothing to lose now, therefore there is a more upbeat vibe in the dressing room than there was previously. For us, the season has been uneventful. But we had a great season overall and played some excellent cricket. Harpreet Brar and Prabhsimran Singh have also been playing well all season long, and Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma have done really well. Things can change drastically in cricket. At the press conference prior to the game, Jitesh stated, “We just lost out on some luck.”
“We’ll play even more fearlessly in the final game, as Punjab Kings are known for their brave cricket. We will all be playing to win, and everyone will do it with the right intentions,” he continued.

Punjab Kings’ IPL 2024 campaign was impacted by injuries and obligations abroad.
Notably, Chris Woakes, Curran, and Jonny Bairstow all departed for international duty after the match against Rajasthan Royals, along with Kagiso Rabada and Liam Livingstone, who had already left the PBKS squad due to their respective ailments. Currently, their only international choices are Sikandar Raza, Rilee Rossouw, and Nathan Ellis.
