In the ongoing IPL 2023 match against the Mumbai Indians, Australia’s Marcus Stoinis wrought havoc with the bat, smashing 89 runs off just 47 deliveries. On a pitch where the majority of LSG batters were struggling to get going, the 33-year-old rose to the occasion and played an outstanding inning to help the host team score 177 runs in the first inning.
As a result of his batsmanship, LSG won the match by five runs and enhanced their standing in the IPL points table.
Meanwhile, LSG fielding coach Jonty Rhodes praised Stoinis’ work ethic and recent success, stating that it has been enlightening for him to observe the cricketer and learn how he prepared before facing opponents in various conditions.
“All we see during a @IPL match is the final score, but it has been enlightening to observe @LucknowIPL @MStoinis prepare for every game. Jonty tweeted on Wednesday, “Every surface and opponent provides a unique challenge, and he structures his practice accordingly using the hashtag #legend.”
LSG ascend to third place in the IPL 2023 points tally.
LSG’s five-run victory over MI propelled them to third place in the IPL standings, while the Rohit Sharma-led side dropped to fourth. Notably, with the victory, the host team has moved closer to the playoffs, although it is not yet assured.
Next, the Krunal Pandya-led squad will face the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens; if they win, they will not only clinch a spot in the top four, but also have a chance to finish in the top two. However, the Krunal Pandya-led squad will also need to monitor the Chennai Super Kings.
Meanwhile, Mumbai is currently under tremendous duress. Even if they defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad in their final match, a great deal will depend on their net run rate, as Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings can also conclude with 16 points, the same as Mumbai. Thus, the path to the semifinals is currently alive and well.
