Cricket fans are eager to see the major event that will take place in Dubai, the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, which is less than a week away. 333 players total, 119 of whom are international players, will be put up for auction. Some foreign players are the favorites to win large sums of money based on their 2023 World Cup achievements.
A select few players turned heads and became the talk of the town during the massive One-Day International (ODI) event. In the forthcoming auction, certain IPL franchises may not hesitate to purchase these players at exorbitant fees, given their outstanding performances.
Five players stand a good chance of winning huge money at the 2024 IPL auction:
1. Daryl Mitchell
With a strike rate of 111.06 and 552 runs scored in 10 games for New Zealand during the 2023 World Cup, Daryl Mitchell looked amazing. With these figures, he emerged as the competition’s top run scorer. The Kiwi icon will be auctioned off at the next business event for his asking price of INR 50 lakh.
Some teams may choose to trust Mitchell for the 2024 campaign after observing his performance. After releasing Phil Salt and Rilee Rossouw, two middle-order hitters, in November, the Delhi Capitals (DC) may target Mitchell in the upcoming auction. With INR 28.95 crore left in their budget, the Capitals may spend a lot of money to sign Mitchell.
The New Zealander didn’t live up to the hype when he made his IPL debut in 2022 wearing the Rajasthan Royals (RR) uniform. He was not sold in 2023, but because of his brilliant form, he should be picked up this time.
2. Dilshan Madushanka
During the 2023 World Cup, Dilshan Madushanka had outstanding ball handling skills. With nine wickets in nine matches, the bowler finished as the third-top wicket-taker in the ODI competition. With his outstanding exploits against elite teams like Australia and India, the speedster attracted attention.
Madushanka will start the auction with a base price of INR 50 lakh, but he might spark a bidding war amongst the teams. It wouldn’t be shocking if Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) signed the veteran Sri Lankan for the IPL 2024 auction. He is currently a member of the SA20 League’s Durban Super Giants (DSG).
Since they have parted company with Australia’s Josh Hazlewood, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) may potentially be interested in him in addition to LSG. Given the difficult conditions in India, Madushanka can be a threat to hitters, as his impressive World Cup performance demonstrated.
3. Gerald Coetzee
During the 2023 World Cup, Gerald Coetzee performed admirably for South Africa. He became his team’s top wicket-taker after taking 20 in just eight games. Because of his World Cup exploits, Coetzee may fetch a hefty price at the next Indian Premier League auction.
The five-time IPL champion Mumbai Indians (MI) may command a huge price for the Protea bowler given they parted ways with pacers like Chris Jordan, Jhye Richardson, and Jofra Archer prior to the auction. Kyle Jamieson has also been cut from the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) roster, and they may potentially put out a bid for Coetzee.
After seeing Coetzee’s 2023 World Cup performance, the Chennai-based team may decide to sign the 23-year-old for the IPL. Coetzee plays for the Johannesburg Super Kings (JSK) in the SA20 League. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have severed their relations with both Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee. In an attempt to strengthen their fast-bowling squad, the two-time IPL champions may not think twice about spending a large sum of money on Coetzee.
4. Travis Head
Following his incredible World Cup performance, Australia’s Travis Head, a batter, will be among the favorites to win the most expensive player in the forthcoming auction. With two tons and fifty, the southpaw smashed 329 runs, demonstrating outstanding form in the ODI spectacular.
Franchises will be enticed to purchase him at auction after his incredible batting display. In just 10 appearances over the course of his two years with RCB, Head managed a strike rate of 138.51 and only 205 runs. The 29-year-old didn’t sell at either of the two auctions in 2018 or 2023, after 2017.
The Australian legend’s starting bid in the 2024 auction will be INR 2 crore, but his current form should help him land a big deal. After observing Harry Brook’s appalling play, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) decided to let him go. In an attempt to strengthen their batting lineup, they may now seek Head in the auction.
5. Rachin Ravindra
In the realm of cricket, Rachin Ravindra has gained immense recognition for his incredible batting performance for the New Zealand team at the 2023 World Cup. He moved up to fourth place in the tournament’s run score with 578 runs in 10 games and a strike percentage of 106.44. Due to his performance in the ODI World Cup 2023, the Kiwi all-rounder may get a chance to establish himself in the IPL.
The maximum base price for Ravindra’s name in the upcoming IPL auction is INR 50 lakh; however, several franchises may go up against each other in the bidding to sign him. New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell, a compatriot of Ravindra, has left the RCB, and the 24-year-old may draw their notice.
