The BBL 2023–24 season included ‘Electra Stumps,‘ glowing wickets that change color to represent different match events—a major technological advancement in cricket. Unveiled before the Sydney Sixers against Adelaide Strikers, these innovative stumps dynamically change color during fours, sixes, and in between overs, in addition to changing color upon impact like the ‘zing bails’. This innovation promises cricket fans a unique, captivating, and engaging viewing experience.
Cricket’s innovative history
The modest wicket has undergone three revolutionary improvements in cricket history with the introduction of these ‘Electra Stumps’. Stump microphones were first used during the 1970s Kerry Packer World Series Cricket, which increased the attraction of the sport on prime-time television by allowing viewers to hear the sounds of the game up close. Later on, this technology developed into a crucial component of the Decision Review System (DRS), which helps evaluate ball deflections with the use of the ‘Snickometer.’
The ICC’s adoption of LED bails in 2013 marked the second revolutionary change, which came considerably later. With the help of these flashlight-equipped bails, TV umpires were able to make more accurate decisions in run-out situations by seeing exactly when the ball disturbed the bails as hitters tried to get within the crease.
