Australia’s seasoned off-spinner Nathan Lyon spoke candidly about Cameron Green in a recent conversation. Lyon has given the 24-year-old all-rounder, who has moved up to the number four place, a big thumbs up.
Nathan Lyon, who is renowned for making direct statements, revealed that he has faced difficulties as a bowler due to Green’s performances in Shield cricket, especially when he bats at number four. In spite of this, Lyon stated he thought Green might develop into an international cricket player at that position, much like Jacques Kallis.
“Bowling to Greeny, who bats at No. 4 in shield cricket, has been a challenge for me and has caused me a lot of headaches. Lyon was reported by Perth Now as saying, “I really like watching him bat at number four and I feel like he could be the next Jacques Kallis of international cricket at that position.”
Given that Jacques Kallis was a renowned cricketer from South Africa who amassed over 25,000 runs and 500 wickets in international play, the connection to Kallis makes sense.
Hailed as a generational prospect, Green’s form declined after he reached his first Test century in March 2023, which resulted in his exclusion from the 2023 Ashes series. Nathan Lyon is a big believer in Green’s ability to succeed at his new batting position despite recent setbacks. With a focus on the pleasant environment in the changing room and a mention of Steve Smith at number one and Cameron Green at number four, Lyon conveyed his trust in the team.
“There is so much confidence in that change room around all the guys and not just Smithy batting at No.1 and Cameron at number four,” he continued.
Nathan Lyon: I don’t have to discuss Smithy.
Although Lyon complimented Cameron Green, he downplayed worries regarding Steve Smith’s form, emphasizing Smith’s incredible record and unmatched problem-solving abilities. Lyon says he has faith in Smith’s abilities despite obstacles as Australia looks to destroy the West Indies 2-0 in the series.
“Scotty doesn’t need my introduction; his stats speak for themselves. Nobody has expressed concern regarding Smithy’s form. There is a lot of discussion regarding the batting of this player, who is possibly the best of the past ten years. He’s probably the best problem solver I’ve ever played with, so I sit here and giggle,” Lyon said.
