In the fifth match of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024, India Women faced United Arab Emirates Women on July 21 at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla. After winning the toss, UAE chose to bowl first. Shafali Verma followed suit, striking a rapid 37 off 18 balls, while India lost Smriti Mandhana early on, having scored 13 off 9 balls. Dayalan Hemalatha was only able to stay for two runs because Jemimah Rodrigues supported Harmanpreet Kaur.
For the fourth wicket, the pair put up a 54-run partnership before Jemimah left after making 14 off of 13. Richa Ghosh became Harmanpreet’s new companion in crime, as the two batsmen put up a 75-run partnership for the fifth wicket. India set a massive mark of 201 for 5, but Richa stayed unbroken with a brilliant 64 off 29, while Harmanpreet was bowled out on 66 off 47.
Theertha Satish and Rinitha Rajit were swiftly removed from the team as they were chasing, scoring four and seven runs respectively, while UAE scored 24 runs in 5.2 overs. Samaira Dharindharka could only muster five runs as Esha Oza and Kavisha Egodage put up an important fourth-wicket stand of forty runs. After Oza left the game with 38 off 36, the bottom order collapsed and the exhausting pace of the innings proved to be the deciding factor.
India tops Group A with a massive victory.
All that remained was to score 87 runs off the final over with Egodage on strike and a series of tailenders to follow if she leaves. Despite the difficult task at hand, Radha Yadav bowled some tight lines to leave little space for them to score. Rajitha was run out on the last delivery, and India won the match by a commanding 78 runs. With two wickets, Deepti Sharma was the standout bowler for India, with each other bowler taking one.
