Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), made the announcement on Sunday that India has been presented with the “Guinness World Record” for the highest attendance ever recorded for a Twenty20 match.
The momentous occasion took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Gujarat during the final match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, which was ultimately won by the Gujarat Titans. The match was played against the Rajasthan Royals.
“The creation of the Guinness World Record in India is a moment that should make everyone in the country proud. This one is for all of our fans, whose unrivalled enthusiasm and unflinching support have made this song possible. Congratulations to GCA Motera and the IPL team! “, stated a tweet sent out by the BCCI.
Additionally, Jay Shah posted on his Twitter account the following: “When 101,566 people watched the epic @IPL final at @GCAMotera’s magnificent Narendra Modi Stadium on May 29, 2022, they broke the record for the largest attendance at a Twenty20 match that was held in the Guinness Book of World Records. We are extremely delighted and proud to have received this record. A huge thank you to all of our supporters for making this achievement possible.”
The fact that the country as a whole has been recognised with the Guinness World Record for the most people ever to watch a Twenty20 cricket match is undoubtedly an inspiring and humbling experience.
The Narendra Modi Stadium, formerly known as Motera, underwent renovations in 2021 and was renamed with the hopes of attracting a crowd that would “beat records” when it came to the number of people that attended cricket matches at the stadium.
Formerly known as the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) Stadium in Motera, the current capacity of this stadium is 110,000 spectators, which is over 10,000 higher than the official capacity of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which is 100,024.
