In July and August of 2024, India will go on a white-ball series trip of Sri Lanka. Three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) and three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) will be part of the tour, which starts on July 26.
For both teams, as they usher in a new era under new leadership, this series represents an important turning point. After winning the T20 World Cup in 2024, Gautam Gambhir, the new head coach of India, will take the helm for the first time. Sanath Jayasuriya has been named as Sri Lanka’s temporary head coach in the interim.
At the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, two T20Is will be played back-to-back on July 26 and 27, marking the start of the series. After that, the action moves to the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo for the 50-over phase, which starts on August 1 and has a two-day turnaround between each match.
With their World Cup success, the Men in Blue are playing their second T20I series; their reserve team is now playing in Zimbabwe. A combination of seasoned players and up-and-coming talent is anticipated for the squad.
All eyes will be on Hardik Pandya, who is expected to captain the T20I team, while veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja have stepped down from the format. With some experienced players possibly rested to manage the workload, KL Rahul could wear the captain’s hat for the ODI team.
However, following their early elimination from the T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka is hoping to make a comeback. The home squad will be keen to take advantage of their knowledge of the local environment and the recent experience that their players have obtained in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024.
