In addition to leading the Indian batting lineup as captain, Rohit Sharma is also regarded as one of the team’s most accomplished batters. When he bats for the national team, his performance is scrutinised very seriously by the coaching staff and the fans.
In comparison to other batters of his calibre, Rohit has gone an unusually lengthy time without scoring a century.
The last time he struck a century was on September 2, 2021, when he was playing England in a test match. On January 19, 2020, the great batter recorded his most recent century in one-day internationals (ODIs) against Australia. His previous century in a Twenty20 International was scored all the way back in 2018 against the West Indies.
In the first one-day international match against Sri Lanka, Rohit displayed a great deal of promise but was dismissed on 87 runs. In the second One-Day International, the captain of India was eliminated after scoring just 17 points.
Gautam Gambhir was questioned about the reason behind the shift in Rohit’s form before the second one-day international.
His response was: “Probably due to the stress of being captain. That is the only thing that comes to mind. When you are the captain of the team, you are held accountable every day not only for your own performance but also for the performance of your entire squad. This adds an additional layer of strain to the situation.
This is something that occurred in the T20 world cup that came before this one as well. In spite of the fact that I am a fan of Rohit’s approach and that I have praised his batting so frequently, I did not think he played particularly well in the previous Twenty20 World Cup. It’s probably due to the added stress of being captain.”
Another one of India’s legendary cricketers, Sanjay Manjrekar, is quoted as saying: “Over the past few years, he has placed a significant emphasis on playing cricket in test matches.
They enjoyed a wonderful trip of England, where he was successful in getting runs. It’s possible that he has lost interest in white cricket due to the fact that he is putting so much effort into test cricket.”
