Returning to test cricket has not been simple or straightforward for Mir Hamza. After being absent from the Test squad for more than three years, Hamza was brought back in but was unable to take a wicket in either the first or second innings in either of the matches.
On Day 4, during the second innings, the 30-year-old had a quick impact when he clean bowled Devon Conway for a golden duck on the first delivery of his opening stint. This marked the beginning of the end for Devon Conway.
Conway made an effort to play a thunderous on-drive, but Hamza’s ball flew past his front pad and then ricocheted into middle and off stump instead.
It is important to note that this was Hamza’s first wicket in a test match in more than three years, and only his second overall.
The 30-year-old Karachi native was given a spot in the Test squad by the interim selection committee, which is being directed by Shahid Afridi, a player who previously captained Pakistan in the Tests.
After the early dismissal of Conway, New Zealand was 76/1 when lunch was served, with Tom Latham and Kane Williamson continuing to defend their position.
While Williamson was still not out on 29, Latham had already reached 37 on the scoreboard. After lunch, the away team will have an opportunity to increase their 117-run lead.
In response to New Zealand’s score of 449 in the first innings of the second test match being played in Karachi on Thursday, Pakistan’s first-innings total was 408 when they were bowled out earlier on Day 4 of the match.
After the last player, Abrar Ahmed, was out of the game without scoring, Pakistan fell down by 41 runs. Saud Shakeel remained unbeaten with his previous score of 125.
Both Ajaz Patel and Ish Sodhi, both of whom spin for New Zealand, claimed three wickets apiece.
The first match of the two-match series, which was played in Karachi and also finished in a draw, has levelled the series.
