While a dominant team, led by Marnus Labuschagne, who scored a brilliant unbeaten 154, Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith both reached the 50-run mark. On Wednesday at Perth Stadium, Australia prevailed against the West Indies to take the lead in the first test of their series.
As a result of the choice made by captain Pat Cummins to bat in hot and dry conditions, the home team amassed an alarming score of 293-2 before the day’s play was stopped.
After David Warner was dismissed for five, Marnus Labuschagne and Khawaja put together a partnership that would go on to score 142 runs. This was followed by Smith’s undefeated partnership with Labuschagne, which also scored 142 runs.
A concentrated Marnus Labuschagne brought up his eighth century in his 29th Test, and with the in-form Smith still undefeated on 59, the omens are not good for the visitors, who have not won a test match in Australia in 25 years. Labuschagne survived chances on 75 and 137 on his way to scoring his eighth century.
In front of a rather small crowd of 10,929 spectators, the West Indies bowled with a great deal of discipline; yet, their chances were quite limited.
Khawaja scored 65 runs when he edged Kyle Mayers to wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva just before noon. This was after they had already taken an early wicket by dismissing Warner for five runs early on in the game.
After Warner was dismissed by the teenage pacer Jayden Seales, Labuschagne and Khawaja got together and barely made a mistake during their innings.
In the first session of the first test match between the two teams in almost seven years, they were forced to put in a lot of effort in order to overcome economical bowling. As a result, they reached 72-1 before lunch.
However, following the break they picked up the pace, with Labuschagne adding to his score by hitting a three off of Jason Holder.
Quickly after, a perfect Khawaja, who has been a rock at the top of the order this year, soon followed. He reached his 18th half-century in his 52nd Test by smashing spinner Roston Chase for four and then a single to achieve the milestone.
