Beginning on December 14, Abhimanyu Easwaran, who is now the captain of the Bengal squad but has not yet made his debut for the India side, will join the Test team in Chattogram for the two-match series against Bangladesh.
According to ESPNcricinfo, the selectors are currently waiting for the definitive assessment of the injury that Rohit Sharma received to his left thumb during the second one-day international.
On Wednesday, Rohit hurriedly returned to Mumbai, where he consulted with a BCCI-designated specialist. The management of the team is keeping their fingers crossed that he can recover in time for the second test, which will begin on December 22 in Mirpur. The World Test Championship consists of series that are comprised of two matches each.
Easwaran has already arrived in Sylhet, where he will lead India A in their two red-ball matches against Bangladesh A. Easwaran is in charge of India A’s red-ball tour. In his two innings, he scored 141 and 157 while playing against a line-up that included several players who had previously participated in tests.
His score of 157 not only earned him the honour of Player of the Match, but it also helped India A build a lead that was sufficient to win by an innings and 123 runs.
Since Easwaran is a regular participant in the Dhaka Premier League, he is well-versed in the playing conditions that are standard in Bangladesh. This year, he was a part of the Prime Bank team that competed in the 50-over club competition in Bangladesh.
However, his performances for India A while on the shadow tour were what actually established his preparation for the tour.
In the past, Easwaran has gone to England with the Indian Test squad. This trip took place in the previous year. It was in December 2013 when he made his debut in a first-class match, and in the three years since then, he has risen through the ranks to become one of India’s next-in-line red-ball openers.
His overall first-class statistics are quite amazing, with a best score of 233, a total of 5576 runs in 134 innings, and an average of 45.33 runs scored per inning.
After a productive run in the Ranji Trophy in 2018-19, during which he scored 861 runs at an average of 95.66, he was selected for the India A squad.
In spite of a significant drop in performances in 2019-20, in which he scored a total of 258 runs at a strike rate of 17.20, he was still considered for selection because of his potential.
In the event that the Indian skipper is unable to play in the test matches, it is believed that KL Rahul and Shubman Gill will start the batting for India in the first test.
