During the second Twenty20 international that was played against New Zealand, Suryakumar Yadav was selected as the Player of the Match. This was the seventh time the honour has been bestowed upon him in this year.
Suryakumar Yadav, who is widely considered to be the best Twenty20 hitter in the world at the present, scored a spectacular innings of 111 runs against New Zealand on Sunday during the second Twenty20 International of the three-match series.
After only 49 balls, Suryakumar reached the three-digit mark, giving the impression that he was playing at the top of his game. As a result of his heroics, the hitter was rightfully awarded the Player of the Match award.
In the process, he also went on to achieve a rare achievement in the shortest format of the game, surpassing Virat Kohli in the process. This allowed him to achieve it.
It was the seventh time in the annals of Twenty20 cricket history that Suryakumar was awarded the distinction of Player of the Match for India in a single year’s worth of competition.
Surya has now surpassed Kohli, who has won a combined total of 6 Player of the Match accolades inside a single calendar year, as a result of receiving this honour.
In the history of international cricket, only Sikandar Raza has been awarded Player of the Match honours on as many occasions in a single calendar year as Suryakumar Yadav has (7). On Tuesday, in the third and final Twenty20 international of the series against the New Zealanders, Surya will compete with Raza for the possibility to surpass Raza’s total.
When asked about his play in the game, Surya stated that the team’s objective was to “take the game deep,” and that was the focus of his own performance as well.
“When I stepped into the batter’s box, the idea was very obvious. At the 12th or 13th over, we contemplated batting for a longer period of time and decided that a score in the range of 170 to 175 was acceptable.
The secret (behind his amazing shots) is all about intent, and you have to make sure that you are having fun. It’s not just about how much work you put in during your practise sessions, either.
Coming here and having a full game while also taking a lead in the series is a satisfying experience. It feels wonderful to be up 1-0. I had the impression that I did not give sufficient thought to the events that were taking place. Just followed my strategy, and it turned out to be effective. During the post-game presentation ceremony, he remarked on the fantastic crowd that was present.
