Following its successful implementation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, the Impact Player rule will be implemented in the forthcoming edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). In addition, the competition will feature a Decision Review System (DRS), but unlike the IPL, it will not be available for wides and no-balls.
The addition of reserve day to the playoffs is an additional significant adjustment. Notably, the previous edition’s championship match was rained out, and Chepaul Super Gillies and Lyca Kovai Kings were declared co-champions. In response, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has scheduled reserve days for all playoff matches, including the upcoming edition’s finals.
Salem will hold the first qualifier on July 7 and the elimination match on July 8, while Tirunelveli will host the second qualifier on July 10 and the championship match on July 12. The MA Chidambaram Stadium will not host any TNPL games this year due to renovations in preparation for the 2023 ODI World Cup, which is scheduled for October-November in India. Dr. R. N. Baba, the TNCA’s additional secretary, verified to reporters during a press conference that Chepauk will not host a match for the second time since 2021.
“Chepauk will not host any matches this year because the stadium’s floodlights are undergoing renovations in preparation for the eagerly anticipated ODI World Cup,” Baba told reporters.
The TNCA is also considering introducing a women’s competition similar to the Women’s Premier League (WPL). It is believed that a women’s TNPL is in the works and that the organisers will affirm its existence in 2024.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu batsman and Kovai Kings captain M. Shahrukh Khan stated that IPL franchises are also showing interest in emerging local talent. “The manager of the Punjab Kings approached me and informed me that he and a few scouts from the club would be coming to evaluate the players. Shahrukh stated that talent scouting and the desire to recruit exceptional individuals are prevalent in India. “Everyone is willing to look for someone exceptional and recruit them,” he added.
