With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season coming to a close, Pat Cummins of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) is the center of attention. The fast bowler is at the pinnacle of an incredible accomplishment as his side prepares to play Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the championship match tonight in Chennai.
Given his lack of T20 team leadership experience, several fans and commentators expressed disapproval of Pat Cummins selection as SRH captain prior to the season. But the 31-year-old has expertly led his squad to a strong second-place result in the league. In their quest to win their second IPL trophy, Orange Army’s comeback for the championship game has been fueled by his leadership.
Pat Cummins will be vying for a title for the third time in less than a year, having already won the ODI World Cup in November and the World Test Championship in 2023 against India. He recently acknowledged his early misgivings about taking on the captaincy.
“Well, that sounds really good. The streak of winning prizes has to end sometime, in my opinion. Yes, the past two years have been amazing, but prior to this series, I had never captained a Twenty20 cricket match. I therefore had no idea what to anticipate. The T20 match moves quickly, but drawing on my experience captaining ODI teams here in India last year, I don’t believe it seemed too unfamiliar to me, Pat Cummins stated.
We had a good idea of how we intended to play: Pat Cummins
Under his leadership, the Hyderabad-based team embraced an aggressive batting strategy, with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma starting the innings strongly. The pair’s outstanding efforts, which included several powerplay pairings, have been a significant talking point for SRH throughout the campaign.
We had a really firm plan for how we wanted to play—very aggressively. In a season of 14 games, you won’t win every one, but if you play the way we think you’ll win most of them. That’s basically how everything went; there are small hiccups along the road, but it’s acceptable as long as you attempt to keep things moving in the right direction,” he continued.

Additionally, Pat Cummins has been instrumental in developing the skills of young players like Abhishek and Nitish Reddy, who have become the franchise’s breakout stars.
“The two most notable instances are presumably Nitish and Abhishek. Although they are not part of the Indian setup, these men have been amazing. “Those guys have taken the game on, put themselves out there, and are having breakout seasons. That has been the story of our season,” he said.
