Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Mumbai Indians, is not having a good IPL 2023.
So far, the 36-year-old opener has only made 257 runs in 13 matches. Because of this, former New Zealand international Simon Doull thinks that the opener should give up being captain, like Virat Kohli did, and just enjoy his cricket for now.
He thinks that Rohit Sharma will be able to play his natural game if he gives up being the captain of the Mumbai Indians. Simon Doull also said that it helped Kohli and Royal Challengers Bangalore because Faf du Plessis ended up becoming one of their most reliable hitters in recent years.
“I thought it was a good idea for him (Virat Kohli) to step down as captain of RCB, just as I do with Rohit now that he is captain of India. I just think this is the event where he needs to be free and just play,” said Simon Doull on Cricbuzz.
“When I talked about Virat and being captain, it seemed like all the pressure was on him. Indian captaincy, three formats, RCB captaincy, and just to see that taken away, and it was never going to go to someone he didn’t value. So, only two or three guys in the world of cricket could have gone to Bangalore and been captain,” said the veteran.
Doull also said that RCB was able to sign the former South Africa international for a fair price. So far, he has led RCB to the playoffs in 2022, and RCB has done well in the current tournament while he is in charge.
“In the end, they paid a lot of money for Faf. The case was already there, but he had to sign off on it before they could bring it to him. So, he gives up being captain, gives his stamp of approval, and they get Faf,” said Doull.
RCB is currently in fourth place in the IPL points table, and if they beat Gujarat Titans on Sunday, May 21, they can make it back to the playoffs for the fourth time.
