Dinesh Karthik, an Indian cricketer and commentator, discussed the fundamental issues that still persist within the current squad competing against Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2023.
Following dominating triumphs in the first two Tests and retaining the prized Trophy, India’s winning streak in Tests at home came to an end with a nine-wicket loss to Australia in the third Test at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
“We cannot deny that India’s top seven have not achieved the scores they desire. We are discussing repeated collapses. Is batting on this field difficult? Without a doubt. Yet, as a team, they elected to play on certain fields, therefore they must be confident on them. They are capable of it, and many of the guys in isolation have likely played on tougher surfaces and excelled, but international cricket is a very other ballgame,” the 37-year-old stated on Cricbuzz.
Victories masked India’s problems: Dinesh karthik
The wicketkeeper-batsman thought that it was pointless for India to support players who were unable to perform in such difficult conditions. He added that these issues are not new; they have existed since the Bangladesh series, but India decided to disregard them since they were winning.
“After you get out a few times, there are so many doubts that it lowers your confidence. Then, it can be quite challenging to go out on the court and continue to believe in yourself in order to play the huge shots necessary to escape pressure. “I absolutely empathize with the Indian batsmen; it’s a lot of work, but that’s Test cricket,” he stated.
Karthik opined that the loss in the third Test has thrown everything into disarray and that it is time for the Indian thought tank to make significant adjustments.
“They would acknowledge that a big portion of it has been concealed by two factors: lower order contributions and India’s victories in both of those matches. If you look back to the Bangladesh series, they also suffered against spinners, but that was obscured by India’s victories and the contributions of the lower order “he added.
“But when you lose a match, it is blatantly evident, it is right in front of you, and people will talk about it, as they should. It has occurred often over time, prompting the question of why team India continues to back these players despite their inability to produce the required scores, as Karthik concluded.
