Anil Kumble, a former captain of India’s cricket team, has proposed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that the country’s younger players be permitted to compete in various Twenty20 leagues located all over the world. This would give the players the opportunity to broaden their horizons and gain valuable experience in preparation for the 2024 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the
Since the inception of the Indian Premier League in 2008, other nations have launched their very own Twenty20 competitions, such as the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia, the Pakistan Premier League (PSL), the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), etc.
However, while players from other countries (with the exception of Pakistan) are welcome to compete in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not let any active Indian cricketer to compete in leagues outside of India.
“I believe that being exposed to something is helpful. That is something that has become abundantly clear to us thanks to the kind of progress that it has brought about in Indian cricket. For instance, the Indian Premier League (IPL), which allows players from other countries to participate, as well as the various reforms that have been implemented in Indian cricket, have been very beneficial.
Why not give a young player the chance to try their luck in a different country by sending them abroad and allowing them to compete? According to ‘ESPNCricinfo,’ Kumble was heard stating that.
“I believe it is crucial that you need to have everything that you need to do so that by the time 2024 rolls around, you are well prepared to take on a World Cup tournament.” A number of Indian players participated in the competition despite having little to no previous experience competing in Australia.
On the other side, players like Jos Buttler and Alex Hales used their years of experience from competing in the Big Bash League (BBL) to their advantage and defeated India by ten wickets in the semifinal of the Twenty20 World Cup on Thursday.
This was in spite of the fact that England did not have to compete in any of the games that were held in Adelaide during the course of the tournament. Kumble is of the opinion that India has to adopt a more adaptable batting strategy and line-up going forward.
“The second thing that I think needs to come into this squad is a flexible attitude to batting or the batting order, and I feel like both of those things are necessary.
“Because in twenty-minute games, I’m quite sure there isn’t a predetermined batting order at all. You need to be adaptable in the way that you are going to utilise the resources at your disposal “Kumble remarked.
The former leg-spinner is of the opinion that the team management should go back to the drawing board and first determine the type of cricket that India will play in the future. Next, they should select the younger players who fit in with the strategy and give them opportunities to be successful.
“And in the same vein, if you choose the type of cricket that we are interested in and then determine the essential young players that you believe require those opportunities, then why not? That, in my opinion, is a significant point.”
