Veteran spinner Amit Mishra of India expressed dissatisfaction with BCCI’s choice of Shubman Gill as captain of the five-match Zimbabwe series. The Gujarat Titans, led by Gill, finished ninth in the IPL 2024 points standings. Recalling that performance, Mishra said that Gill appeared inexperienced as a captain and that the BCCI ought not to have awarded him the captaincy.
Gill, 24, has shown he can be a reliable batsman in the shortest format, so Amit Mishra continued, saying he had no problems with Gill remaining in the team. He went on to say that Mishra thought Gill’s appointment as captain was a mistake because there were better choices, but Gill was chosen to provide the young man with leadership experience.
“I never would have appointed him captain.” As you noticed by watching this season’s IPL, Gill has no idea how to lead the team. He shouldn’t be named captain of the Indian squad just because he plays for them. Over the past few IPL seasons, Gill has performed admirably and has also performed well for the Indian squad. On Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, Mishra stated that the Indian team appointed him captain in order to provide him with leadership experience, something that wasn’t evident during his time leading the Gujarat Titans in the IPL.
“I’ve seen Shubman Gill in the IPL, and he lacks leadership skills. He is ignorant of captaincy. It’s unclear why they appointed him captain. He went on, “Just because he plays for the Indian team doesn’t mean he should be captain.”
Ruturaj Gaikwad should hire a good manager: Amit Mishra
Given that Gaikwad can play in all three game types, Mishra thinks he’s a better option than Gill. Interestingly, the 41-year-old claimed that Gaikwad’s lack of a skilled manager who can advance him is the reason he doesn’t receive enough opportunities in the senior squad. While Mishra doesn’t despise Gill, he thinks Gaikwad is superior.

“I like Shubman Gill, too, therefore I’m not a Shubman Gill hater. However, I think Ruturaj is a better choice because he has scored runs for the Chennai Super Kings and in Asian Games scenarios, which are tougher circumstances. Similar to how Yashasvi Jaiswal was with the Indian team at the T20 World Cup, he is a good alternative and ought to be retained with the squad. He is a capable player in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. Who among the squad maintains composure is the most crucial factor? He rarely plays dangerous shots. He ought to appoint a capable boss, Mishra advised.
