Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector for the BCCI, gave an explanation for why Hardik Pandya was not chosen to lead the T20I squad. Hardik was named captain for the Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) following the 2022 World Cup in place of Rohit Sharma, and the all-round player has performed admirably. His record as captain is impressive; he finished second in 2023 and led the Gujarat Titans win the IPL in 2022.
In the T20 World Cup 2024, he led India as vice captain as well, however he was left out of the captaincy for the series against Sri Lanka. Agarkar gave an explanation, stating that the all-rounder’s fitness has been a problem, which may have been the reason the selectors were hesitant to give him the baton.
Hardik Pandya will be a valuable member of the team, Agarkar continued, and his absence as captain allows selectors to better manage their workload. He claimed that after speaking with Hardik, the selectors gave him an explanation for why Suryakumar Yadav was chosen as the new T20I captain.
In terms of Hardik Pandya he remains a crucial member of our team. He has definitely struggled with fitness.
The coach or selections then find it challenging… Fitness is obviously challenging, so we’re looking for someone who can commit to being here most of the time.Nevertheless, we think Surya possesses the skills required to be a captain, Agarkar stated at the press conference.
“We believe we can manage Hardik more effectively as well, having witnessed his skills with the bat and ball during the World Cup… We inquire with each participant about any changes to their role. Yes, we have spoken with him, he continued.
