On Saturday, the board of directors of the International Cricket Council (ICC) unanimously re-elected Greg Barclay to his position as the Independent Chair of the highest cricketing organisation for a second consecutive two-year term.
As a result of Tavengwa Mukuhlani’s decision to withdraw from the process, Barclay was able to run unopposed for the position of Chair of the Board, and the Board has confirmed that it will fully support him in this endeavour for the next two years.
In the initial plan, Barclay, a commercial lawyer based in Auckland, was going to take over as Chair of the ICC in November of 2020.
Formerly the Chair of New Zealand Cricket (NZC), he also served on the board of directors for the 2015 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
Greg Barclay made the following statement in response to the news of his reappointment: “It is an honour to be re-elected as the Chair of the International Cricket Council and I would like to thank my fellow ICC Directors for their support.” The statement was made public as part of an official release.
“With the launch of our global growth strategy that provides clear direction to develop a prosperous and sustainable future for our sport, we have made great advances forward over the course of the past two years.
He continued by saying, “It is an exciting time to be involved in cricket, and I look forward to continuing to work closely with our Members to develop the game in our core markets as well as extend it beyond that, ensuring that more people all over the world can enjoy cricket.”
Mukuhlani continued by saying, “I would like to congratulate Greg on his re-appointment as ICC Chair, as the consistency that will be provided by his leadership is in the best interests of the sport.” As a result, I’ve made the decision to withdraw my candidacy.”
