Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir analysed India’s batting and said he expected more from the players. He estimates that the team fell 50–60 runs short, and that this shortfall will have an impact on them moving ahead, particularly in the ODI World Cup.
Despite a strong beginning, the Indian batting team in the present Asia Cup couldn’t capitalise on the momentum and was eventually bowled out for 213 runs versus Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma, the captain, got things going perfectly by scoring his third consecutive half-century, but Dimuth Wellalage and Charith Asalanka wrecked havoc in the middle, decimating the Men in Blue bats. Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul attempted to respond, but ultimately failed.
He continued by saying that it is currently a huge issue that batters are having trouble in spin-friendly environments. The bowler from Delhi also provided examples of India’s performance against Australia in Chennai earlier this year, pointing out that if the spinners were successful in getting a good grip on the ball, the hitters were unable to get going.
“A pattern is emerging here. You may recall the Australia-India game from Chennai, where India was attempting to chase down roughly 260 runs against spinners like Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar. We were unable to pursue it. We struggle whenever the ball grips, and we’re not even sure whether we can win the game, remarked Gambhir in an interview with Star Sports.
Although Kohli and Rahul were out softly, the others were defeated by the front foot: Gautam Gambhir
The former Indian opener also discussed the mechanical improvements that Team India’s top order batters failed to make in their match against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 Super Four. He emphasised how Kohli and Rahul were defeated early. However, he praised the deliveries that resulted in the dismissals of Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma.
“This is a 270-run wicket, not a 350-run wicket. When the ball grips, it is crucial for the batters to adjust, especially if you are three down for 160 or 170 after 40 overs. The dismissals of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul were gentle, but the other players were defeated by the front foot. Speed defeated Rohit Sharma, and that ball to eliminate Gill was magnificent. You anticipate more from Indian batsmen, said Gambhir.
India, meanwhile, held off 213 runs while winning the game by 41 runs. In the middle, Kuldeep Yadav was exceptional, taking four wickets while Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah each took two.
