After AB de Villiers and Kevin Pietersen attacked Hardik Pandya for his subpar captaincy in the current IPL 2024, former cricket player and current Kolkata Knight Riders coach Gautam Gambhir took a swipe at the two. Neither of the former cricket players accomplished anything noteworthy as a leader, according to Gambhir, who also stated that Pandya, who assisted Gujarat Titans in winning the 2022 Indian Premier League and placing second the following year, should not be questioned.
against Gambhir’s comments against AB de Villiers and Pietersen, former Indian cricket player Atul Wassan stated that he doesn’t take Gambhir “seriously” because he frequently makes contentious remarks.
“What are you saying? He is making an effort to stir up controversy because that is his habit. In an interview with India News, Wassan stated, “I don’t take Gautam Gambhir seriously.”
Notably, Wassan and Gambhir have been close since 2017, when the latter was the Delhi team’s captain and the former was a selector. In the same year, Gambhir lost his captaincy, and he subsequently disclosed that he had received no prior notice from the selection committee.
Rishabh Pant’s poor performances later in 2019 led Wassan and the selection committee to remove him from the captaincy. The committee chose to hand the baton to Pradeep Sangwan instead of Gambhir because they wanted to name a more experienced cricket player as captain.
In the meantime, Pietersen, a former captain of England, responded to Gambhir’s remark and has graciously taken the criticism. Notably, in his 36 games as England captain, Pietersen only managed 11 victories. He is not incorrect. Pietersen tweeted, “I was a terrible captain,” on X, using several laughing emojis.
However, Kolkata are once again a title contender under Gambhir. The team will have two chances to advance to the championship game this season if they finish first in the standings, as confirmed.
