After defeating Zhang Shuai of China in straight sets, 5-7, 7-5, Coco Gauff of the United States became the youngest player ever to go to the quarterfinals of the US Open.

After prevailing in a match that lasted 1 hour and 57 minutes, the 18-year-old player from Atlanta who was the 12th seed moved on to face Caroline Garcia of France in the round of eight. Before this season, Gauff had never advanced past the third round of the US Open in any of his previous appearances.

Gauff, who competed in the final of the French Open in June, had to put in a lot of effort in order to prevail over Zhang, a skilled Chinese veteran. Zhang is a seasoned player.

However, the 33-year-old man from Tianjin paid the price for losing his cool at crucial stages of the match.

Gauff took a 6-5 lead in the first set by breaking the Chinese player ranked 36th in the world, and then he held his serve to win the first set.

Zhang then blew a good opportunity to tie the match in the second set when she broke Gauff to put herself in a position to win the set while serving for it at 5-3.

Gauff, on the other hand, battled back to win the next four games in a row, clinching the match by twice breaking Zhang’s serve to move on to the quarterfinals.
