In 2016, Faruque Ahmed resigned from his role as top selector following Head Coach Chandika Hathurusinghe’s inception of a two-tier selection panel via BCB president Nazmul Hassan at the time. Even before Hathurusinghe became President, Faruque was determined to remove him. Hathurusinghe’s term as President ends in February 2025.
Following student protests that resulted in the overthrow of the government and the installation of a new Prime Minister, a lot happened in Bangladesh’s political scene. But the game of cricket was not spared; Nazmul Hassan, the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), resigned from his post. In his first press conference, BCB President Faruque Ahmed announced his selection as the team’s new head coach.
“The details of Chandika Hathurusinghe‘s contract are still unknown to me. I haven’t changed my mind on what I need to see officially, though. Over the course of the next two or three days, I have to talk to my colleague to see if we can replace him. We need to assemble a shortlist and see who is interested in joining us,” Faruque stated, according.
“Given his reputation and experience both on and off the pitch, there’s no reason he should continue serving as Bangladesh’s coach. If you fire him, you will lose some money, but his existence will cause more harm. He had earlier stated, “I had realised that it is impossible to work in the setting he desires to operate in.
Reappointing Hathurusinghe for a second term was a grave mistake: Faruque Ahmed
In 2023, Hathurusinghe began his second term with Bangladesh, and the current president of the BCB was the first to express doubts about the appointment. Coincidentally, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal launched a defamatory campaign in the media, causing unrest in the dressing room. The legendary Alan Donald resigned as bowling coach as well following the team’s appalling results in ICC competitions.

“Reintroducing Hathurusinghe for a second term was a grave mistake. The last time he quit [in 2017], he had left us in jeopardy. For him, Bangladesh served as a stepping stone. He returned home and took up the role of head coach there. It was inconceivable to me that the president and the other 25 members of the board of directors could have reached such a conclusion. Faruque said, “I hope they are realising their mistake.”
